Why Chelsea Silva

Passion for working with people with disabilities.

My passion for working with people with disabilities began when I moved overseas at the age of 18 to become a live-in carer for my cousin with cerebral palsy. This experience taught me things that a formal education could not…. a lived experience of caring for someone with a significant disability.

During this time, I not only learnt the practical skills of being a carer, but most importantly, that the person with a disability and their family are the experts and the best thing a therapist can do is listen.

After completing my Occupational Therapy degree in 2001 through Curtin University, I moved to regional Australia where I supported both children and adults with disabilities in the community with a range of diagnoses including autism, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal injury, chromosomal disorders and neurodegenerative conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

In 2007, I moved back to Perth where I worked as a Senior OT in Early Intervention at the Disability Services Commission and then in 2010 to an OT role at a large disability organisation, where for the past 4 years I worked as an Advanced Clinician supporting new OT’s.

I am a mum to 3 children and love being an OT. I believe therapy should be fun and engaging and you will often hear me singing badly or laughing loudly.
